![]() A related quantum model was proposed by Arthur Erich Haas in 1910 but was rejected until the 1911 Solvay Congress where it was thoroughly discussed. However, because of its simplicity, and its correct results for selected systems (see below for application), the Bohr model is still commonly taught to introduce students to quantum mechanics or energy level diagrams before moving on to the more accurate, but more complex, valence shell atom. As a theory, it can be derived as a first-order approximation of the hydrogen atom using the broader and much more accurate quantum mechanics and thus may be considered to be an obsolete scientific theory. The Bohr model is a relatively primitive model of the hydrogen atom, compared to the valence shell model. Not only did the Bohr model explain the reasons for the structure of the Rydberg formula, it also provided a justification for the fundamental physical constants that make up the formula's empirical results. While the Rydberg formula had been known experimentally, it did not gain a theoretical basis until the Bohr model was introduced. The model's key success lies in explaining the Rydberg formula for hydrogen's spectral emission lines. The improvement over the 1911 Rutherford model mainly concerned the new quantum mechanical interpretation introduced by Haas and Nicholson, but forsaking any attempt to explain radiation according to classical physics. In the history of atomic physics, it followed, and ultimately replaced, several earlier models, including Joseph Larmor's Solar System model (1897), Jean Perrin's model (1901), the cubical model (1902), Hantaro Nagaoka's Saturnian model (1904), the plum pudding model (1904), Arthur Haas's quantum model (1910), the Rutherford model (1911), and John William Nicholson's nuclear quantum model (1912). ![]() It is analogous to the structure of the Solar System, but with attraction provided by electrostatic force rather than gravity, and with the electron energies quantized (assuming only discrete values). In atomic physics, the Bohr model or Rutherford–Bohr model of the atom, presented by Niels Bohr and Ernest Rutherford in 1913, consists of a small, dense nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons. The 3 → 2 transition depicted here produces the first line of the Balmer series, and for hydrogen ( Z = 1) it results in a photon of wavelength 656 nm (red light). ![]() The orbits in which the electron may travel are shown as grey circles their radius increases as n 2, where n is the principal quantum number. ![]() The Bohr model of the hydrogen atom ( Z = 1) or a hydrogen-like ion ( Z > 1), where the negatively charged electron confined to an atomic shell encircles a small, positively charged atomic nucleus and where an electron jumps between orbits, is accompanied by an emitted or absorbed amount of electromagnetic energy ( hν). Not to be confused with Bohr equation or Bohr effect. ![]() ![]() This can't be true in solid archive mode, which should almost always be used (otherwise you might as well use zip). > the -mt option seems to allocate core per file I happily paid the $29 even though I could absolutely use it without paying a dime, just like thousands of other users. There is an open source unrar, so I don't fear being locked out on my archived. Yes, I get that it's not an open source software and doesn't come with a permissive license, but neither do Windows OS itself, and many other software I use. For my personal archives, rar format and WinRAR never let me down. I use 7-zip for zstd, and brotli cli when I particularly need those formats. Splitting files, locked archives, AES protection, SFX, and other features are easily accessible. For example, if you double click a PNG, it only extracts that PNG file. WinRAR supports various formats such as ISO, JAR, and a few typical zip-ish formats. It supports changing the compression level during the compression. This fills the lack of a `tar` tool in Windows space. Especially in Windows, it is often faster to compress a rar archive than copying several hundreds of files. I strongly prefer WinRAR (the software) because it does everything I am looking for in an archiving and compressing software. But without connecting that to the concept of copyright infringement, the accusation has no basis, since you're just using what you paid for it.ĭisassembling a binary executable to understand it is exactly the same as reading a book to understand it. The proprietary EULA wants the law to believe that you're stealing if you continue to use the software after violating the agreement. The idea that your right to have a copy can lapse due to violating the EULA has holes in it, because copyright isn't about the right to have a copy, but about the right to produce and redistribute copies.įor instance, on a bit of a tangent here, if you steal a book out of someone's backpack, that is not copyright infringement, and cannot be. I have also seen bit flips on USB-Sticks. There where weeks, when all seven archives had and error! Disk, NFS, USB-Stick didn't mater. I had a cronjob that checked the tar.gz-Backups from the past week and there was a 50% change of "Unexpected EOF in archive". Because tar has no index, if something bad comes along, everything after that can't be read.) 17 years ago, I took a deep dive into rar and replaced my tar.gz backup process with it. The reason I'm a RAR fan is because TAR failed me multiple times! (The first one was ~21 years ago. Tar is a bit over engineered for the simple use cases. It's the reason zip is so popular, it doesn't support that at all. Where it gets weird of course is with things like file permissions and other linux specific stuff like user and group ids. Of course most of the archive/zip ui tools out there would support tar files anyway. The main downside is that tar files are less common on windows and the whole double file extension thing confuses people with file managers that hide them (i.e. It supports a few more compression algorithms of course. I'd probably use tar with bzip2, 7zip, or even gzip compression. I'm old enough to remember PKZip being a new thing :-).įor as an actual backup format, tar is a common alternative. With zip files this also used to be a thing that some tools supported. Less of an issue these days but of course browsers don't support this. That is convenient when downloading over a slow/unstable connection (or if you don't know how to resume an aborted download with wget or ftp). This used to be common with rar and I think 7zip also supports this. ![]() Where things get tricky is splitting the resulting archive in multiple files. I think for the common use case of distributing giga bytes of data in a reasonably efficient way, 7zip is fine (e.g. ![]() ![]() With the help of her talking pet rat, she has to solve three riddles before the night of the Witches Ball in order to be accepted as a full witch. UPDATE: This works in the default nautilus file manager too actually. One caveat to using nemo as your main file manager in Ubuntu is that the Trash bin in it doesn't work properly! So, whenever you want to retrieve something from the trash or empty the trash, just use the default file manager in Ubuntu, which is nautilus. Sometimes you have to refresh the folder with F5 or Ctrl + R to get it to show up. Wait a half-second for it to register, then release. Drag to the nemo file folder where you want it. Note: to drag a link, hover your mouse then click and drag over the far left side of the bar. Now, in nemo you can just drag and drop links right out of the Chrome/Chromium browser search bar and into the nemo file manager. On the face of it, the Orb is a circular control that induces tonal changes to any patch without making demands on the user in terms of understanding. Next up is the most innovative enhancement. Granular Zoom: This page gathers all the parameters of Granular Synthesis around a central graphic that does a pretty decent job of representing the depth and density of the sample grains. The best database of synth patches I've ever played just got even better. you name it, there are new and stylish examples here. Ode To Gary: described as a tribute to Gary Numan, again using only the DSP oscillators, this rich polysynth patch is constructed out of detuned Harmonia oscillators, with further oscillators faded in by the mod wheel.Ĭomplex evolving pads and psychoacoustic atmospherics, addictive arpeggios, every synth type known to man, acoustic and ethnic instruments, spooky choirs. Triplet Wobbler: uses no samples, just a layer of DSP oscillators with the Waveshaper's Crusher and Reducer both drafted in to create a full, hard‑edged wobble bass. Whispers Of Doom: A drone of epic proportions, this is an ominous soundscape of unsettling groans and whooshes adrift in a dark sea of reverb. At a touch of the mod wheel, the atmosphere turns positively scary, thanks to the introduction of polyphonic bit‑crushing. There Will Be Pain: A tense string patch in which members of the orchestra deviate from the path of conventional tuning as the Harmonia oscillators' levels and detunes are modulated. Put simply, Harmonia is a process that multiplies an oscillator up to four times here it boosts both of the patch's layers, giving, in effect, 10 oscillators - or a throbbing backing‑track from one finger! Machine Of Malice: This is a chugging patch layering a 'Brutal Moog' sample with a Harmonia‑rich noise sequence. Conscious that entire afternoons are lost in this way, for brevity's sake I'll confine my observations to just a few instant favourites: Identifying the members of the latest collection is as simple as typing '1.5' into the patch browser's search box. It's surprisingly tough to rank the update's content in order of preference, so I'll start with the most generous: the addition of 780 extra patches, pushing Omnisphere's database beyond the 5000 mark! As the synth's 'STEAM' engine has been boosted (in the oscillator department) by this upgrade, many new patches elect to demonstrate this rather than drawing from the core sample library. ![]() When it appeared, 1.5 was followed in rapid succession by two further bug‑fixing updates, so the version discussed here is actually 1.5.2. Thanks to enticing Youtube demos of a mysterious "Orb” and details of an iPad application, plus rumours of a host of new patches, we users watched our calendars avidly until the Promised Day in February. In a world where you rarely get owt for nowt, this free update was keenly anticipated. That's over‑simplifying things a tad, though, and to get a better appreciation, I recommend a leisurely read of the December 2008 SOS review ( /sos/dec08/articles/spectrasonicsomnisphere.htm). Individual patches consist of two layers, each with extensive timbral and modulation capabilities, effects and filters. Spectrasonics' Omnisphere is a multitimbral virtual instrument whose patches are based on a 40GB collection of varied, often remarkable audio recordings, paired with a powerful DSP synthesizer. Click the ball (or touch the surface with your finger if using Omni TR) and then spin it around the circle to generate timbral changes. The Orb as it appears from within Omnisphere. Spectrasonics bring yet more goodies to the Omnisphere party, aiming to make their highly acclaimed synth even better. ![]() ![]() Be careful while dimming the display, I could barely see anything at the minimum level. But it does help reduce eye strain, which is sort of the point anyway. Imagine how your monitor would look like if you're wearing sunglasses, it's like that. Dimmer is a freeware tool that solves this problem in a subtle way.ĭimmer does not reduce the actual brightness of the screen, instead it adds a virtual overlay on top of it. Also, this will also not affect screenshots.Trying to do something as simple as adjusting the monitor's brightness shouldn't require you to fiddle with a clunky menu.
